A few more 6th grade altered books



I had a few more altered book photos I wanted to share, but for the 2nd night in a row blogger is giving me error messages every time I try to upload these photos. I can't for the life of me figure out why, so I'm giving up for now. Maybe I'll try again some other time, or maybe not, since I have other projects getting finished to share with you too!

  2. Oh I wish you would upload more photos, you're inspiring me. I've been wanting to do this with kids for the last two years and have never seemed to get around to it, despite having a box of cast off books on the shelf languishing. I bet the kids loved it. More info please help me get started.

  3. That error message happened to me two days ago but it went away. I love these. So creative. Love that tongue sticking out and the window inside. What a higher level thinking project. I think they will keep these and the memory of making them for years to come.

  4. Barbara, I was at school till almost 8pm tonight (I must be crazy) so never got to do my posting, but I'll try to post more book photos tomorrow. The NYC at Christmas book changed today - the tree on the crysalline cover (a mix of salt in ModPodge) now has little sequins decorating it, and she added new pages inside the book too.

    As far as more info to get started, how about we talk about it when we get together over Christmas vacation? (I haven't forgotten!) Meanwhile, when I get a chance I'll try to post some basic how-to info. My best advice is to SET LIMITATIONS. I didn't, and while the work is awesome, the time element is overwhelming.

  5. Oh - and to Stuck in the Mud - yes, I got your email! I wish my school had joined in the prof. development day. We used to get together with all the schools involved but because of our district's decision to use Learning Focused training, we haven't been a part of the group in a couple of years. I miss it - it was so much more beneficial that what happens now, unfortunately.

  6. Oh Phyl! I'm so happy that you're still interested in getting together. I would love your input on getting started because I am truly stuck. (I have never made an altered book myself so I suppose that would be a good place to start). Now I'm really motivated to take this first step before we chat. Would you like to meet up there or down here? It doesn't matter to me, but if down here we could walk through Clarke Art and Williamstown College Museum (both great and free) and I will treat you to lunch. But, I don't care what we do... I know it will be fun!

  7. Phyl- Hello!

    I took a graduate class on altered books. I was wondering if you have ever posted any tutorials or "quick tips" for altered books with kids. How do you start them, what parameters do you set? Maybe you have posted about this, but I would be interested to know more about the teaching of these!

  8. Gosh, Jessica, if you took a class you're way ahead of me. Like every crazy thing I do, I just dove in head first on this project. I figured what's the worst that can happen? You ruin a book that was headed for the dump anyhow?

    Anyhow, I do have some other posts about altered books, but I don't know if I've given a lot of direction. I have a handout from a workshop I recently taught, and I'd be happy to send it to you if you provide an email address. But there's also tons of info out there way beyond what I can offer. My biggest suggestion for working with kids is something I didn't do enough - DEFINITELY SET PARAMETERS - limitations and clearly defined expectations will make it so much easier. Hope this helps.
