Fundraiser do-over, & texture rubbings

So a few days ago I told you that 14 pieces of kindergarten art for the Original Works fundraiser had to be re-done because they were rejected as being too lumpy. So during my prep period on Friday I pulled the 14 confused K's (out of their nap time) in for 1/2 hour and thought I had in infallable idea. I gave each child a Sharpie to draw a garden of flowers, some crayons to color them in, and some washable watercolors to paint the white spaces. Easy and simple; so I thought. As you can see by the two pieces I have posted above, some turned out great and others - well - let me know if you can find the garden in the one on the right... Oh well. Done and handed in.

Meanwhile - isn't it great when you have a wonderful sub that you trust? My former student teacher from last spring now has a part-time job in another disrict, but she was able to sub for my sick day on Tuesday. Here's some of the texture rubbing pictures done by my 2nd graders that day. It's a project that can easily be completed in one art class, including a motivating activity. I think the kids did really well with this project; it's obvious the sub was clear with her instructions.

  1. I really can relate to the kinder story. I feel the same almost everytime I do a project! But I bet the kid on the right was just as proud of his work as the one on the left. :)
    Have a good week!

  2. I love the giraffe with the head! They are as cute as Kindergarteners. I love that you have 100 followers exactly! This is a reason to celebrate!

  3. Too lumpy? Hmmm... Those texture pics are a neat idea. Love the orange (?) bird on the bottom.

  5. How did you explain the making of the animals? Do they do the texture rubbings first or draw the animals first?

  6. Erica, i'ts simple: first draw the animal (or a flower, or a tree, a sunshine, a house, a castle, a city, etc) really big to fill the page w/black crayon (I describe it like making a coloring book page). The only limitation is that it should be something with big simple shapes. I have a big bin full of cut up textured wallpaper pieces - maybe 2 to 3" in size. The texture goes under the paper, and they have to wrok to really stay in their lines to fill the shapes with textures. This is one project where those rainbow crayons are definitely not useful.

  7. Oh - one more thing - if you want to take this further, you can use watercolor over the texture rubbings.

  9. Just an Original Works comment. I used them the last 2 years. Last year they rejected half my pieces as casting too many shadows. I re-did, resent bla bla bla. Then I ended up getting all kinds of wrong stuff, last stuff, never sent stuff- HUGE hassle. They didn't even contact me to do it this year. I think they knew what a terrible job they did for me.
    Love your blog!

  11. If your unhappy with original works, try Art to Remember...I've always been happy with them, they are great to work with and fast! I've never had to have my students redo anything in over 10 years with them!

    1. Thanks Julie, but since I'm now retired I'm not doing fundraisers any more. But Original Workks is a regionally local company, and our PTSA had sponsored the fundraiser and chosen them. Our PTSA is now disbanded (after many disagreements - very disappointing) so it's up to my replacement whether she wants to continue to run some sort of fundraiser, and I would say this year, her first in my former position, was just too busy to worry about this anyhow!

Meanwhile, it appears you are a new blogger! Congrats, and let us know a little more about who you are on your blog please!
