Pretty kitty.
5th grade cats by Grant, Mattie, and Caitlin
Still more cats are done that I haven't shown you, but I couldn't resist posting these 3 adorable kitties. Finally, only a few stragglers are left in the cabinet, in need of final touches like whiskers or collars, but for the most part, the cats are DONE and are displayed all over the place in the school library, waiting until our big art show in May.
So now the 5th graders have moved on to their new project, and are merrily working on... can you guess? ... toothpaste batiks! Of all my posts on my blog for almost two years now, this post in May 2010 about this crazy process has been viewed by far the most - over 5000 times! YIKES! And now we are tackling this again, with a theme this year of - can you guess?? - No? - dragons, castles, wizards, etc - FANTASY!
Keep in mind this process is EXPERIMENTAL and I have let the kids run with their own ideas for the artwork, so check back after vacation to see how they turn out!
Love the angle of the yellow cat's head -- just adorable!! Happy Vacation, Phyl:)
ReplyDeleteThanks - One more day...

DeleteThese cats are the cutest! I love how large and bright they are! Can't wait to check out your toothpaste batiks- a colleague of mine does a similar project with india ink... I'm sure toothpaste smells much nicer!
ReplyDeleteYes, the room smells minty fresh! It's the opposite of the India ink process, which leave a black line or crackle. The toothpaste mix leaves a white line. Wait and see...
DeleteThose. Are. Awesome! I want to be a student in your class.
ReplyDeleteCool idea for the toothpaste resist. I have never heard of that. Do you think acrylic paint would work better? I think we only have washable tempera in the classroom.
ReplyDeletePhyl, you should SO not retire, you have too many good ideas!
OOH Marcia, get rid of the washable tempera! I do not like washable paint at all.
DeleteAcrylic paint didn't work for me in my initial experiments, as it didn't rinse properly. But go ahead and experiment.
As for retiring, yes, I still have lots of ideas but will need a new venue to try them. Things are getting a little ugly around here and it is time to go.
Love, Love, LOVE the cats!!! They are so adorable!
ReplyDeleteWell Phyl,
ReplyDeleteI hope the cats turned out like you wanted them to. I think they are amazing and the expressions on their faces and posture are so realistic! I'm sure Laurel Burch is up in heaven with a huge smile on her face!
:)Pat
