A retirement home for aging dragons

There is NOT a dragon in the Art Room. As our time at North Warren Central School winds down, Lucy had to find a new place to live. I think she'll be happy at Loon Lake.

First, a nervous Lucy sunned herself in the grass, and then perched on a rock (hunting for prey perhaps?)

When she was more acclimated to the environment, she relaxed on the dock, and explored the woods, even practicing a little tree-climbing.

Tired out, and hot from the sunshine, she headed to the bunk room for some rest. I think perhaps she's worried about Sparkle, her baby, who hasn't left the art room yet. Sparkle suffered some injuries this year and needs a little surgical intervention from the dragon doctor (me) but I have assured Lucy that Sparkle will be joining her when she is healed.

In the meantime, perhaps she can find some friendship in some distant relatives already residing in her new neighborhood, such as this lovely dragonfly I spotted today.

Here are some views of Lucy's new home.

The Adirondack chair on the porch is the traditional retirement gift from my teachers' union. On the right is the plaque on the front of the chair. Pretty cool, huh?

    1. Thanks for the idea, but with a length of approximately 5' and a similar wingspan, Lucy doesn't fit anywhere easily. She takes up a lot of room! That's why she is at my cabin by the lake. I am considering a way of hanging her on the wall so she can forever be in flight, but for now she's just going to relax. Also, her wings are in need of substantial repair. They were poorly constructed to begin with, and attached upside down and backwards by someone who tried to help me (they were originally designed to curve FORWARD and protect the resting baby) and now with the need to repair them anyhow maybe I'll get them to curve in the right direction or come up with some more practical alternate wings.

  2. I love the idea of the "practical" retirement gift of a chair. You can sit back and savor the moments when you find the time. (It sounds like you are still going to be pretty busy in your new venture. ) Have a great summer and again, congratulations.

  3. I understand if you plan on keeping Lucy because of sentimental reasons. I was just thinking how cool she would look in a public library in the children's section? Just a thought! :)

    1. A library is a lovely idea, but I can't stress enough how much SPACE she takes up, length-wise and width-wise. There is not enough room in either our school library or our local library for something that takes up almost 25 square feet! That's a lot of floor space and she doesn't fit on any normal sized table. The fool that built her (me) didn't exactly think it through, I guess. She also isn't necessarily kid-friendly in terms of handling, with some rough and sharp spots of little jewels everywhere that could be picked off and inserted in little mouths. And she is a challenge to dust (and seriously needs a shower after her years in my dusty art room). Maybe the NEXT dragon I build will be more practical.

  4. I like the picture of Lucy on the dock... that's great! What a beautiful dragon! Good luck with her repairs and finding a new home for her. Congrats on retirement! I love the chair as a gift- something that is practical!
