Crazy Legs, Texture Socks - by grade 1

What FUN!! First graders drew and cut shoes from textured contact paper and stuck them on the bottom an ugly gray sheet of 18x24" paper. Then they added legs, all the way to the top. The kiddos had a wonderful time picking ribbon, rick-rack, lace, corrugated cardboard, and foam strips to make these wonderfully zany textured socks. The one rule was to make the socks a matched pair!
When the glue was dry, the kids cut around them so we could display them in the hall.
The "crazy legs" have been a favorite of passersby!

  2. Phyl these are amazing...so colorful and such personality. It really makes me wonder if they could build the entire figure starting from the shoes and working up.
I hear what you're saying about weather issues. I hadn't really factored that into the plan. But, you know, that's only one possibility, let's keep our eyes open for other options there's bound to be a lot going on around that time.
Now for the important question...how did you get mice in your car? I can't wait to hear the rest of the story.
The handouts sound great. My email is: barbarachilds1@juno.com

  3. What a wonderful idea! you're blog is so inspiring; I actually just finished a Matisse collage lesson inspired by yours with first grade. The kids loved painting the background in geometric shapes and cutting out organic shapes was great practice. I'll be sure to link to your blog. Thanks again!

  5. We have a running event in Madison, WI called Crazy Legs. http://www.crazylegsclassic.com/ In fact, the run was this past weekend! What a GREAT idea to bring attention to running and exercise while also doing a fun lesson on texture. : )
