Intimidated

I got my sketchbook in the mail today for the Sketchbook Project, and am I extremely intimidated! My theme is "science project gone wrong" and the sketcbhook is mine to transform and mail back to the Brooklyn Art Library by January 15th.
Breaking news! Due to a recent flurry of sketchbook requests, they are extending the deadline for signups to November 15, so if you still are interested in the project, here's the link again: http://www.arthousecoop.com/projects/sketchbookproject/exhibitions

Anyhow - back to my new sketchbook - there are 40 empty pages, the last 16 perforated (why?). It would seem so simple, if I didn't look through the website and discover what people actually have done to their sketchbooks. Things like: they take the thin paper out and replace it with heavier paper, re-sewing it in the center. They make the pages fold out to poster-size. They don't just SKETCH in this little bitty sketchbook, they transform it.! How ironic that I'm in the middle of an altered book project with my 6th graders that seems to be going on FOREVER, and now I've got my own and I don't know where to start.

I'll keep you posted on my progress (or lack thereof)!

  1. I am feeling the same way and my sketchbook hasn't even arrived yet!! I did stumble on some inspiring sketchbook/journaling sites this morning, though. Have you heard of Danny Gregory? (http://dannygregory.com/category/journals/) I loved looking through the journal pages that he shares at this link!!

  2. I would feel the same way. So much so, in fact, that I'm not even entering. Ha! Good luck.

  3. I have 14 5th and 6th graders that are participating in this project. I am hoping our sketchbooks arrive next week, then we can get to work! It does seem very intimidating, especially the thought of trying to get the students to really think outside the box. I'm sure I will be pleasantly surprised at their creativity! I'll be participating also, so hopefully they can be my inspiration!

  4. I love it when the tables turn. You are going to get to feel like a student which is a really scary feeling! I had the same problem when I went to a workshop where we had to create art in an hour. I was freaking out and thought how do my students do this?

  6. Erica, you've got the biggest project of all growing inside you right now - and there's nothing more important than that one!

  8. The Sketchbook Project looks like so much fun!. I am extremely tempted to do one as well, but I just don't know how I would find the time to do it.

  9. It is so exciting that you are signed up for this. I am going to give this some serious consideration since the deadline to order a book has been extended.
