Excuse the mess...

Two weeks till our student art show...tick tick tick tick... anyhow, the room's a mess, we've got everything going on at once, but in the middle of it all we took the bucket of marker caps (from dead markers) and made this sign! Isn't it cool? What did I do before I owned a hot glue gun? Everything took SO much longer then!

Meanwhile, my 4th graders are having an absolute BLAST making quickie ice cream cones. We are calling the drying cabinet "the freezer". (When the 1st graders painted gingerbread cookies this winter, we called the drying rack "the oven".) Both these cabinets have doors, so it's fun to say "don't leave the oven (or freezer) door open; we don't want to let the heat (or cold) out!"

Anyhow, we've just begun painting the cones, and the kids love that I told them to put the paint on thick and let it drip, the opposite of my usual painting instructions. I have some brown wire to add for cherry stems, too. Hopefully they'll all be done in time for the show! I'm working on a way to display them all.

On the left is Olivia's cone, in the middle you'll see cones in the freezer in need of painting, and on the right are my samples, which are making me hungry. Maybe I should have painted them strawberry, which I don't like, so I wouldn't feel the urge to head out in search of Ben and Jerry's!

  7. What a great time of year for this post, Phyl. Not only am I feeling so busy with putting shows up and taking shows down but I'm also thinking about going through the markers and pulling out the dead ones. Now I know I'll be saving the caps.

  8. It is hard to decide which idea I like the most.
The ice cream cones or the marker caps?
Good luck with your Art show.

  10. Two things:
    1) I think the ice cream cones have been my easiest papier-mache project ever, we built them quickie-quick! And everyone who walks in the room absolutely drools over them, they look so real. Can't wait for you to see them all done!

2)Other ideas for marker caps? Our original plan was a rainbow, not the sign. But I didn't have enough caps - I'm really regretting the tub of them I dumped earlier this year. A color wheel perhaps? A tree with marker cap leaves? A marker cap mandala? What are your ideas?

  12. I am starting this lesson today! I love it. What did you use for paper mache?

    1. I use "Art Paste" - either School Specialty or Elmer's - it comes in a small box and mixes to make 4 quarts. It's washable and can be stored indefinitely so is convenient for school even if it isn't as strong as a watered down Elmer's glue mix.

Good luck! Let me know how they turn out!

    1. Do you mean INSIDE the cones, under the papier-mache? Or do you mean the object SUPPORTING the cones? If you meant the first, it is paper cones (like for snow cones) and balls of newspaper. If you meant the thing holding the cones vertically, I used some big pieces of foam that I had laying around, that I dug holes into to support the points of the cones. I had a lot of cones, and several pieces of white foam, probably packing foam someone gave me, and also some black. We actually painted the white ones a nice ice blue color, and you can see them all in this post: http://plbrown.blogspot.com/2011/05/we-all-scream-for-ice-scream.html
