In the Art Show - Fabulous Papier-Mache Masks, grade 3

I've previously blogged about building these masks, here: http://plbrown.blogspot.com/2011/04/beginnings.html but I never showed them to you all papier-mached, painted, embellished, and complete!

So here they are, hanging at our art show. I think they're pretty cool! By the way, another blogger mentioned that this art show was pretty late in the year. Not really - remember, we're in school here in NY state until June 24th - so there's still over a month to go, and I still have lots to post. So even if you are done or almost done, please check back over the coming weeks!

Now here's more masks:

And more......

And still more....

More art show, coming soon...

  4. These are all so unique! You said somewhere that they paint with acrylics? When they are gluing embellishments, do they get to use a hot glue gun, or is there another glue that works besides Elmer's? I was thinking about setting up a station with hot glue guns if I can figure out a good way.

    1. Stephanie, we glued two ways. I had a hot glue station (low temp gun), where the kids queued for me to glue, and on their tables they had tacky glue with pop sticks to spread. It works better pretty well because it is thick and holds quickly, though the hot glue is the quickest, obviously. I don't allow the 3rd graders to use the glue gun. However, when I do papier-mache with 5th, I do let them, with some basic instruction (always hold from above, so the glue can't drop on your hand; that sort of thing). If you have an older kid available to come in and assist, they can either help kids while you're at the glue gun, or vice versa. Or if you have 2 helpers, even better! They can each man a glue gun, and everything moves quickly!

And yes, the painting is with acrylics - my preference is Nasco Bulk-Krylic. After the time spent building them, I like the permanent finish of acrylic much better than tempera. If you are pinched and don't have acrylic, you can add a squeeze of Elmer's Glue-All to the paint for an acrylic finish. Just remember to wash the brushes thoroughly!

    2. Wow, thanks for your detailed response! I'm going on 1.5 years teaching and I'm starting to get hung up on the little things lately!

    3. Stephanie, I taught for 36 years. After a while I learned what NOT to stress about! Don't let the little things make you crazy; they are not what the kids will remember!
